The Ultimate Guide to the Best Cold Brew Coffee Method - The "Rocket" Way

Updated: Feb 11

Follow these steps to make the ultimate cold brew coffee
Cold Brew or Iced Coffee

If you're a fan of iced coffee, you'll love cold brew! But what is cold brew and how is it different from iced coffee? Cold brew is a method of brewing coffee by steeping coffee grounds in water for an extended period of time. The result is a coffee concentrate that can be diluted to your desired strength with water, milk or heavy cream. The end product is smooth, full-bodied, and has a less bitter taste compared to traditional iced coffee.

-What are the Benefits of Cold Brew Coffee?

Looking to upgrade your coffee game? Cold brew coffee not only has more caffeine than traditional hot or iced coffee, it's also smoother, less acidic, and easier to drink. Plus, it can last in the fridge for up to 7-10 days without going stale or losing flavor. Another great benefit of cold brew coffee is that it can be made at home with minimal equipment. All you need is a container, water, coffee grounds, and patience.

-Suggested Equipment

Although all you really need is a jar and coffee grounds to make cold brew coffee, we have found three specific items most beneficial in our cold brewing.

-         A Burr Grinder: Rocket Smoked Coffee pre-ground coffee is ground to a medium course grind, so it will work for cold brew, but freshly ground coffee is always better. If you choose to grind your coffee fresh, burr grinders, such as the Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder, give you a much more uniform grind than a blade grinder. Try using a burr grinder if you can. You will definitely taste the difference.

-         A Jar with a Spout and Filters: We like to use a jar with a spout, such as this one gallon mason jar. It not only has a spout, but it also comes with a reusable, stainless-steel filter. We also use disposable filters like these to filter out the finer particles that can make your cold brew coffee taste bitter. Once your coffee is done brewing, you can just remove and toss the disposable filter, making clean up super easy. Then just place the mason jar in the fridge and it is ready to pour at your convenience. An additional bonus is, if any ground sediment does escape your double filtering, it will settle below the spout, giving you the option to pour it in your glass or pouring it out.

-The Basics of How to Make Cold Brew Coffee

We have found that coffee brewing is much like barbecue... everyone has their own “BEST way” of making it. To make the best cold brew coffee possible, we recommend using freshly ground Rocket Smoked Coffee beans and experimenting with different methods to find the perfect flavor profile for yourself. Join our community today and write in the comments section below what your “BEST way” is.

The basic premise of making cold brew coffee is simple. Start by using a coarse grind coffee and combine it with cold water in a jar or pitcher. Let it steep for between 12-48 hours on the counter. Once the coffee concentrate is ready, you can remove the grounds and dilute it to your desired strength with water or milk. You can experiment with different finishing touches such as using flavored syrups or adding heavy cream for a richer taste. Enjoy the smooth and refreshing taste of homemade cold brew coffee with Rocket Smoked Coffee!

-The Rocket Way

This is how we make our cold brew coffee at home. We place 1 bag (10 oz) of Rocket Smoked Coffee, freshly ground to a coarse grind, into a cold brew filter and add it to1 gallon of water (1:12 ratio).  We let our coffee brew on the shelf at room temperature for at least 36-48 hours, depending on how much time and patience we have that week. The longer you let it brew, the stronger the concentrate is, of course. Once we have decided it is done brewing, we remove the bag of coffee grounds, only gently squeezing it before tossing the bag of grounds away. We store our coffee in a mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 10 days, although it rarely sticks around that long.

The result of this method leaves you with a gallon of cold brew concentrate, which can be either poured straight over a full glass of ice if you like it really strong, but at this strength I prefer to cut it with about 25% water. However you decide to pour it, you will be amazed at the full-body and flavors that Rocket Smoked cold brew coffee has in store for you.
